Chipstead 14 Old Wimbledonians 3

The Old Boys lost for the first time in the league this season , going down to a chippy Chipstead XV by two goals to a penalty goal. In most phases of play the O W s were the equal
of the home side, and held their own in both loose play and lineout. However , as the game progressed after the interval they were heavily beaten in the tight and as a result coughed up many penalties going backwards.

The first half saw the OWs in the ascendant and happy to play the game within Chipstead territory. However, despite several charging runs by both Rory Southgate and George
Fairbairn, recycled ball was neither speedy nor direct enough to cross the home try line. Jay Tabb looked dangerous when making incisive incursions from full back linking well, but usually the final pass went astray. Andy Feeney made several bullocking runs with Angus Fairbairn on his shoulder and Tom Ward secured plentiful lineout possession. From one period of pressure a Chipstead player received a yellow card for loitering offside for Tabb to convert the resultant penalty.

Having changed ends with a slender three point lead the visitors continued to take the game to the opposition. However , as the second period wore on the front row of Crossthwaite , Seo and Feeney could not hold the home front row especially with the illegal binding of the Chipstead tight head. Chipstead scrummaging pressure brought them a try in the eighteenth minute which was converted. Nevertheless, the Old Boys came back with some splendid phase play and progressed to within striking distance of the opposition line. Sadly, their best opportunity was conceded by a
poor lineout throw which the Chipstead jumper gratefully accepted, and the chance was gone. Just prior to the final whistle Chipstead prevented the OW s from earning a losing bonus point with their second try of the match, when their No 8 went on a slanting forty metre run to the O W line. This try, like the first was converted.

Next Saturday we have a Cup game against Southwark Lancers from the Shepherd Neame Kent 1 league at home with a 3.00 p.m. K.O. Let’s give them a rousing welcome.
