1st League game of the season
OWRFC beat OWRFC!
Old Wimbledonians 30 Old Walcountians 10
The Old Boys started their 2017/18 league season with a smart performance against newly promoted Old Walcountians. They were into their stride quickly in the first quarter of the game, but the visitors gradually rose to the pace of League 1 rugby and held their own until the superior fitness of the Wimbledonians enabled them to pull away in the final quarter.
The Old Boys backs with Jason Murphy at No 10 attacked with flair several times early on and good combination by Rory Southgate and Mike Ellis produced a try for Seb Whealing on the left wing. Murphy converted and added a penalty immediately upon the resumption. Old Walcountians responded with a penalty of their own for a Wimbledonian ruck offence. Another penalty to Murphy just before the interval for offside gave a half-time lead of 13-3 to the home team.
Just five minutes into the second period some slipshod defence by the Wimbledonians allowed the impressive Walcountian No 8 over their tryline. This try was converted and the visitors became more aggressive and saw more possession, gaining much territorial advantage and confidence. However, another well struck penalty kick from Murphy extended the Wimbledonian lead and they in turn started finding gaps in the visitors' tiring defence. On the half-hour a brilliant solo run by Murphy from inside his own half brought a spectacular try which he himself converted. The match was finally secured when some slick interpassing out on the left between Southgate and Ellis saw the latter cruise over for a try. Once again Murphy added the extras.
An excellent victory against a side that we are sure will be competing for honours at the season's end. Jason Murphy assumed the Harry Tabb mantle of kicker and backs/forwards link at No 10 with sublime grace and effortless footwork. In the meantime we wish Harry the best of luck in his venture with Wimbledon RFC in an attempt to play a higher level of rugby.
